Reading is no doubt one of the most important skills in learning a language. However, reading is also notorious for being boring and challenging for most language learners. Despite the obstacles, students must acknowledge the importance and benefits that reading holds, and learn how to thrive in reading.

Among many benefits of reading, exposure to new vocabularies and how they are used in context is extremely useful for learners. Learning new words in isolation, even with example sentences, will not guarantee a full understanding of those words unless learners are exposed to it regularly in context. In fact, reading offers this kind of exposure. Additionally, reading is also an interesting way to learn idioms and word collocations. For instance, the Reading Advantage course book always includes idioms after each reading passage, along with explanations as well as further examples on how they are being used in other circumstances; thus, not only can students understand words on the line but also have a deeper insight on how to use them correctly. On top of that, reading is beyond argument one of the most crucial way in helping students increase their general knowledge. No matter how fluent students are in speaking or how competent they may be in writing, a great speech or piece of writing would not be possible without good content. With both attentive reading on course books’ materials, which usually include extracts from an extensive range of topics, and active outside reading, learners should be able to improve their general knowledge, produce great content in speaking and writing, and at the same time become more autonomous in learning.

With all these benefits reading has to offer, learners must also recognize ways to make the most benefits out of reading without forcing themselves on it. First of all, reading in class may be boring since readers do not have control over the text they will be reading, yet this should not drive learners away from reading. Language learners must develop the habit of reading outside of class. If students find reading alone to be boring, try reading the same books with a friend or join a reading club. This will give them more purposes to finish a book, as well as provide them platform to discuss and share their thoughts on the book. It is also worth mentioning that readers must choose the right book to read. It is a good idea to start off with genre that is of the readers’ favorite. Also, it is essential to notice that readers should choose a suitable text/book to match their level. It is not advisable for readers to choose texts, which are too difficult for them, in hope of learning more new vocabulary. This will not only waste the readers’ time, but also demotivate them from reading. Reading can only be beneficial if learners actually understand the text. It is also wise for readers to always find time to incorporate reading into their daily habits, whether it is just a 15-to-20-minutes read a day. With advance technology these days, learners can easily read short articles, news, and blogs while surfing the Internet even when they are commuting or eating during lunch break.

To sum up, reading is one of the best ways for learners to master a language. With the mentioned benefits of reading above, students should always make time for reading if they wish to better their English proficiency.
